MV Construction: Transitions

When filming I planned on including transitions such as spins or slides to go into the next scene. The first transition I want to work on is Brandon spinning from one location into another. I have two separate shots for this which I will blend together.

I began by putting the raw footage into the correct order they needed to be in and matching the spin so the second location spin comes in at an angle that the first location spins ends in.

Once I had the clips in place I then started to play around with the opacity and blending modes. The problem I had with this was it changed the opacity of the whole clip and if i cut the clips they would then glitch because they are the same shot but unconnected. Due to this I then shortened both clips and managed to match them without having to fade the opacity or add any transitions.

The second transition I went onto doing was the spin transition, spinning the footage into the next scene. To began this transition I researched a tutorial to help me understand what effects I will need to use along with positioning my footage in the correct places. 

First I chose the two shots I wanted to transition and placed them in the correct order. I then created a blank adjustment layer and trimmed it down to the correct size to fit my footage. I also made a copy of the layer and placed this above.

I then used the replicate effect and dragged that onto my first adjustment layer and set the count to 3 showing my footage in 9 squares.

I then used the mirror effect and also dragged that onto the adjustment layer. I used this to move the squared footage so it mirrored and didn't show the lines of the squares. I did this by using the X and Y navigation tools in the mirrored effect settings. I repeated this step 4 times so all the lines disappeared. I then applied the rotational effect called transform on to the top adjustment layer and set the scale to 300 degrees. This hid the multiple blocks of footage, just showing the middle square. I then un-checked the shutter angle box and changed the angle to around 200 degrees.

I then set a key frame at the start of the transition and set it to 0 degrees and then set another key frame at the end of the transition at 1x (360 degrees).

I also added a cross fade in the middle of where the two clips meet to give the transition a smoother rotation especially as they are both different in colour.

Once I had done the spin transformation I found a slide transformation which I felt looked better than the spin, therefore I went onto replace this transition for the slide instead.

First I split and placed my clips in the correct place. I then added the slide effect and put it onto of my two clips where they meet. I made it about 8 seconds long. I added an adjustment layer and also made this around 8 seconds. I then added the directional blur effect onto the adjustment layer. I then set a key frame where the clips join setting both the direction and blur at 50 degrees and then set two more key frames at the beginning and end of the transition at 0 degrees.

The next transition I looked at was a flash effect which I used as a transition.

I chose to add this transition for the first memory that appears in my music video as it flashes from Brandon performing to him being with Olivia. I created a blank screen and aligned it where the two clips met and used key frames to fade the flash in and out from the footage. Due to the footage already matching the beats of the song, I was able to align the flash so that it also met the beat.

I also added this flash to the title transition so the screen flashed when the title disappears, giving the title disappearance a smoother transition.

Now I have filmed all the shots I need for my video I have been able to create a rough edit with just my footage. I am happy with the turnout as having Brandon perform in between the memories has given the video more energy and excitement when watching it. My next step is to being adding transitions and effects to my footage.

Once I had filmed in all of my locations and checked my footage I began to put together my raw footage in Premiere Pro.

 

Personal Reflection

After creating a rough edit I was not happy with all of my footage. Some shots did not meet the standard I wanted them to be however, I managed to play around with merging two shots into one and played around with matching the videos. I also think I need more footage to space each location out due to seeing similar things too often. I also want to add special effects to my footage such as transitions to give the footage more excitement and a fun element to match the beat of the song. Therefore, I will be researching different transitions and applying them to my video. Along with this I would also like to film Brandon lip-syncing the whole song on his own to add some performance to my music video. This will help separate the 'memories' of them as a couple as the song is very performances based too. I will record this in my school's theatre as it will give the shot a professional backdrop.
