Director: Becca Head
Summary:
The main focus for the video is the relationship between a teenage boy and girl. It will be a narrative music video therefore, showing a story of their time together. Along with this, the focus will mainly be on how the male treats the girl due to the lyrics being about how he will treat his girl like royalty. I will also have moments of the boy and girl lip-syncing to keep the involvement and theme of the lyrics within the video. This could pursue to some of my footage relating to the lyrics. The video will begin with the couple meeting which will then go onto showing how they created some of their memories within the relationship. The use of editing will be used to show different moments/events in their relationship and the happiness and love they have for one another. The video will end with the couple meeting again for the first time which will be a bit like a flashback and then will change to the couple now old and grownup. This gives the audience a twist to the music video as they see their time together when they were younger and then ends with them still together but now older.
Lyrics:
Come be my lover, be my get away car
Come be the new string on my broken guitar
Be the person, gotta take what I want
One step too far (woah)
All this time I’ve been clocking your eyes
I’ve been thinking you’ve got everything I like
You’re acting like you wanna show me if I’m right
If you’re feeling what I’m feeling.
You’ll be my royal highness
Queen bee, with a little sting to ya
You’ll be my royal highneeess
My lady, with a little freak to ya
You’ll be my, you’ll be my royal highness
You’ll be my, you’ll be my royal highneeess, royal highness.
Be my temple, be the start of a fire
Be the one that’s not my usual type
Let me see you’re not a trick of the light
Don’t be shy.
All this time I’ve been clocking your eyes
I’ve been thinking you’ve got everything I like
You’re acting like you wanna show me if I’m right
If you’re feeling what I’m feeling.
You’ll be my royal highness
Queen bee, with a little sting to ya
You’ll be my royal highness
My lady, with a little freak to ya
You’ll be my, you’ll be my royal highness
You’ll be my, you’ll be my royal highness, royal highness.
(It will come along without you knowing, it’s like finding)
A needle in a haystack
(It will come along without you knowing, it’s like finding)
A needle in a haystack
(It will come along without you knowing, it’s like finding)
A needle in a haystack
(It will come along without you knowing, it’s like finding)
A needle in a haystack.
You’ll be my royal highness
Queen bee, with a little sting to ya
You’ll be my royal highneeess
My lady, with a little freak to ya
You’ll be my, you’ll be my royal highness
You’ll be my, you’ll be my royal highneeess, royal highness.
(Without you knowing, without you knowing it’s like finding)
A needle in haystack
(When I come along without you knowing, it’s like finding)
Royal Highness
Detailed Explanation:
The video is a narrative music video performing the song 'Royal Highness' in a fun, happy atmospheric way. The camera will capture moments of happiness within a young relationship amongst a series of events they go through. Throughout the song, tension within happiness builds. The audience will experience this build through sound however, also through viewing many scenes of the couple such as dancing or out with friends and spending time together. The boy featured in the video will mainly be singing some of the lyrics throughout the song due to the singer being a male. On the other hand, at certain points of the video the girl may also join in with the boy such as when they are singing or dancing together.
All scenes in the video will be set up for the purpose of the video such as going to a bowling alley or meeting up with friends. However, once put into these settings my cast will start to relax helping the scenes become even more realistic due to them enjoying themselves instead of just acting. Although these scenes will be set up the atmosphere needed for them will automatically be there due to myself planning to film in public places. For example, at a bowling alley or in a restaurant background movement/characters will already be there giving the video more of a natural touch.
At the beginning of the video there will be an over the shoulder shot (dolly zoom/tracking) whilst the girl walks towards the boy who will be leaning against his car outside a house or pub/bar. His appearance will be very 'cool' and have the look of a typical teenage boy who drives around and is mostly always seen with his mates. Although this is how he is portrayed as a whole character, in this music video he will be shown as a loving and caring boy who wants a girl he can treat well and look after. Once the 5 second introduction has been the song title and artist name will appear cutting this to the beat of the song through editing software. The last beat will then transition to the next shot.
The next scene will be the boy walking away from his car and indicating through his gestures for the girl to follow him. This will be a Mid-shot of the boy as he will be singing to the camera (girl) along with flirting/making gestures to put this message across to the audience. Throughout this music video I will use a lot of blurred pan/whip transitions and directional blurs to transition my footage into some of the next scenes. I feel this will give the video more of an exciting and fun feel instead of always having the footage change on each beat of the song. After the transition the next scene will be the couple sitting in a restaurant/bar on a date. The boy will continue to lip-sync the verse however, this time more of the shots will be focused on the girl and only a couple lines will be aimed towards the audience. I plan to also have some Mid-shots or close-ups of the girl looking towards the camera to give an indication that she is responding to the lyrics/boy through eye-contact, facial features and body gesture. Once again the boy will also be flirting with the girl making the impression of a typical teenage boy who all girls would adore.
Many sequences of dates and being together will be shown throughout the video. Events such as bowling, driving, hanging out, walking, being with friends etc will all be included. I will use this footage for most of the video to give the audience an impression of them both being very happy together and showing a very happy relationship where the boy treats the girl like his queen. I will use many different angles and camera shots to film this footage such as close-ups, mid-shots and using different angles to explore the best way to get their emotions across. I will practice these angles and camera shots to understand what works best for my video.
Towards the end of the song different sections of footage from the events will repeat or will continue to give an overall summary of their relationship for the audience. This will all appear to the beat of the song and using each beat to change the image will create a cheery, buoyant fast section of footage with both of them laughing and having fun with one another. This was inspired by a couple of music videos I came across whilst ding some research. The video that inspired me most I have linked below. Both of these music videos show sections where they have many different atmospheres shown a numerous amount of times. The video 'We Found Love' especially shows this as this song is also based on a relationship between a boy and girl. As the song comes to an end it goes back to the beginning of the video where the girl meets the boy at his car. The young couple then smile at each other lovingly which will be shown through a Mid-shot. The next shot will then appear showing the couple smiling in the same position however, they will now be an older couple, showing the audience that they grew old together and he still makes the girl happy.
Technique and Production Details:
Mise-en-Scene will be very straight forward for this music video as most props needed will already be included within my chosen locations. For example, when going to play a game or going for a meal the 'props' will be at that event. A budget will be needed to afford the music video however, it will be a very small budget which is affordable for this music video. Other props such as a car are also easily accessible for this production. Wardrobe design is important for this video as a variety of outfits will be needed for both characters due to them being seen at different events on different days/times. I will give my cast a list of ideal clothing and a description of the theme of the music video so they can help supply their costume as they will be a similar age and have similar characteristics to the characters in the video.
Although the video is based on both the boy and girl the main focus will be the male. I imagine the male to have brown hair and be an average/tall height. He will have an appearance to him which will be rather 'cool' and almost exciting like a little mystery. His dress code will be casual however you will be able to understand that he looks after himself and his appearance is important to him. His personality will be very flirtatious but will also be very caring and a fun person to be around.
I also imagine the female to be brunette however, this can change when I cast my music video. She will be very pretty and also look after her appearance. Her outfits will be a mixture of dressing herself up to look nice but also including some more casual outfits. Her makeup will always be done from either a natural look or a more glamorous look. Her personality will be very bubbly however, also will have that mysterious vibe about her due to both of the characters being flirty etc.
I will shoot my music video using the Nikon D3300 with a zoom and regular lense. Using both of these lenses will help be capture better footage depending on the camera shot and angle. I will play the audio whilst recording my video in the background using either a phone or speaker helping either of my cast members get the right speed of the song and will also help them when they need to lip-sync. When I edit my footage, I will delete all sound from my footage and input the song as the sound for the video. I plan on recording all my footage within a week as some settings will be in the day and some will be in the evenings therefore needing different times day and night. I plan on using mostly all of my own filming equipment to help me within my shoots however, I will also borrow some equipment that will be provided by the school to help me capture and create the correct angles, lighting and camera movement.
Certain editing techniques I would like to include in my video are cutting to the beat and using a blurred pan/whip transition or directional blurs for some of the footage such as switching to a different location. I will complete this by practising different methods both with my camera and editing software. Along with these transitions, other techniques I will include in my video will be cutting to the beat, lip-syncing and overlaying footage. I also plan on trying to get the best lighting I can whilst recording my footage however, my video will contain different colours, light textures and moods which I will change when I start editing my music video.
